Ski Mountains of Victoria and NSW
Victoria and New South Wales are home to some of the most incredible ski resorts in Australia. There are many unique experiences available for skiers of all ages and skill levels, as well as magnificent bushland backdrops, offering visitors the opportunity to create unforgettable memories. To ensure you’re comfortable and able to participate in activities, it’s important to dress appropriately and bring the right gear with you when visiting these destinations, the most popular of which are detailed below.
Mount Buller, Victoria
Just over three hours from the Melbourne CBD, Mount Buller has approximately 80km of marked trails spread across more than 300 hectares of skiable terrain. There are amateur and advanced slopes on which to get the blood pumping and the thighs burning. Many of Australia’s Winter Olympians train at this resort, which regularly holds competitive events where the best skiers and snowboarders in the world take part. Mount Buller also offers dog sledding for kids, boasts the largest lift network in Victoria, and has a range of dining and accommodation options available.
Falls Creek, Victoria
Falls Creek is one of the most picturesque ski fields in Australia, located just four and a half hours from Melbourne. The pedestrian-only ski village is the largest resort in Victoria with accommodation, dining, and snow activities that are ski-in/ski-out, which means you’re never far from the slopes. 92 named runs are available across some 450 hectares. Home to a thriving ski school along with child-dedicated runs through the forest, Falls Creek is a great destination for families.
Thredbo, New South Wales
Located south of Sydney, Thredbo is known for having the longest ski run in the entire Australasian region – the 5.9km Thredbo Supertrail. Amateur skiers have their own dedicated area complete with chairlift, while more intermediate and advanced skiers have multiple options to choose from. When you’re not skiing, the village has an assortment of restaurants, bars and live music events to enjoy. There’s also cosy, convenient and luxurious accommodation available, some of which offers spectacular views of the mountain.
Perisher, New South Wales
Perisher is a six hour drive south of Sydney and, with more than 1,200 hectares of rolling slopes, is the largest resort terrain in Australasia. It boasts some of the best terrain parks in the country, and many Olympic skiers train here. Skiers of all abilities can enjoy skiing at Perisher, which is also a popular destination for international travellers who can ski for free if they have an Epic Pass. There’s no central ski village, but several great accommodation options are available.
